How to Adjust the Temperature on Heated Towel Rails

Heated Towel radiators can be both a delight and a source of a great mystery. Warm towels and a bath in a pleasant room are a great idea. However, the radiator can sometimes get too hot or produce insufficient heat. The warm shower makes you feel cold immediately, with the at-best lukewarm towels not helping.

Other radiators in the house can be controlled easily. Most radiators will come with a TRV (thermostatic radiator valve) which allows for easy control.

How can you modify the output of heated towel radiators that don't come with a TRV?

Why don't towel radiators have TRVs

A thermostatic radiator valve can usually be installed without any structural problems. It is more common to find these valves in bathrooms that are not desirable.

Bathrooms are often heated even though they are at their hottest. A shower might produce steam, which could heat the room. TRV would likely cause the radiators to turn off when it is needed to remove condensation.

Many systems require one radiator to be on at all times. Not shut off at TRV. This requirement is met by the heated towel radiator.

The Simple Checks

The main boiler can control the temperature in some cases. For instance, you could adjust the central heating temperature setting. This will have an impact on all radiators, so it has a greater impact than just controlling the heated towel radiator.

No Singular Answer

The main boiler can heat towel radiators. They can either be powered by electric or dual fuel. The temperature setting method will differ from model to model.

The internet is a great source of information, even if it seems glib. Simply enter the make and model information into Google along with the adjust temperature option to get specific results.

This will provide you with specific advice for your radiator, along with easy-to-follow steps. Video advice may also be available.

To adjust the temperature, the most common way to do so is to turn the knob clockwise to turn it off. Cool or open the heat by turning anticlockwise.

It can be tricky to turn the knob, so pliers may be necessary. Lockshield is a feature that radiators may have. This covers the area you turn and prevents accidental modifications.

Once you have the lock shield removed, turn the spindle exposed clockwise to reduce heating.

This method allows you to turn the heating off completely clockwise, and then slowly turn anticlockwise until the heat is sufficient.

There could be air in the system, either in the towel radiator or in other parts of the circuit. The problem can be fixed by turning the valves counterclockwise and bleeding the radiator until water comes out. If that fails, turn off all radiators and leave the towel radiator on to see if it forces air out.

It is important to note that some pure electrical towel radiators only come with an on/off switch and not a thermostatic control. These models won't allow you to adjust the temperature.

Dual fuel radiators could be having trouble adjusting because they are set to electrical heating when the main water system should control it.

Need professional assistance?

If the valves are not working or the radiator is bleeding, it could be that you need to call a plumber. This is especially true if the manual was not available for your radiator.

Radiator failure to heat up or adjust can be caused by many factors.

It is important to make sure that the problem is limited to the one radiator. Is the problem specific to this particular radiator or part of larger problems?

It's time for a shift

You may decide it's time to upgrade. There are stylish heated towel radiators starting at £40.

You can get a dual fuel radiator for as little as $50. This will provide heating when the main heating circuit turns off, and protect pipes from damage due to winter freezing.
